HTML Lesson 1
Getting Started and HTML Documents

We will begin by going over the following concepts today. Please be sure that you complete today's assignment at the end of this page.

  1. Be able to define WWW, Web, SGML, DTD and HTML
  2. Be able to navigate the CS1000 web site.
  3. Know what an HTML Document is.
  4. Know about WYSIWYG editors for HTML. (For now simply knowing they exist is enough. We will use one later.)
  5. We will cover getting your files on server later.
  6. Have a basic understanding of tags.
  7. Be able to create the Minimal HTML document.
  8. Know how to view the page source in your browser.

Assignment:
Create a minimal HTML document. Include a header with the title "[Your Name]'s Web Page." In the body write a small paragraph about a topic that interests you (see below for topic selection). This topic will be used for the duration of the quarter. Save your web page as default.html in your home directory (My Documents).

Note:
The topics you may choose from are Sports, Coursework at ACS, Your Family, Your Religion, and Hobbies. Do not include questionable or immodest pictures. If you believe that your pictures need screening, then do so, or do not use them. Your testimony would be a good idea. It should be something you find interest in. Your site should have accurate information and be well presented. There should be no spelling or grammar errors.
